About the Author
Nobel prize winning Nelly Sachs grew up in Berlin. In the 1920s she published legends and tales, but beginning in the 1940s, she wrote poetry. As the tragic events of the German Jews began to unfold in the late 1930s, Nelly and her mother escaped to Sweden (1940), where the poems she wrote were a "mute outcry" to the events of the Nazi regime and World War II.
