A cien a os del nacimiento de Octavio Paz (1914-1998), los problemas que l discuti desde el punto de vista de la historia y de la cultura de M xico siguen siendo muy semejantes. Nuestro pa s, tambi n, sigue siendo profundamente complejo y desigual. De esta manera, nuestro acceso a lo que podr a llamarse la modernidad es todav a un reto en cuanto a sus realizaciones e, incluso, en cuanto a nuestra comprensi n sobre sus contenidos deseables. De all que la celebraci n del centenario de su natalicio nos ofrezca una nueva oportunidad para ocuparnos de esos temas que Octavio Paz delimit con profundidad y rigor al haber situado el debate cultural y pol tico de M xico en un plano universal. Si nuestro libro ha de estar a la altura de ese debate tiene que situarse en sus mismas coordenadas para reivindicar precisamente all la cr tica y libertad de pensamiento.
